Stationary Waves

The difference between a stationary wave and a progressive wave is that the stationary waves remain stationary at all time at certain points. These points are always stationary and called nodes usually marked as “N”.

The points between nodes are vibrating with different amplitudes. The midpoints between successive nodes have the largest amplitude. These midpoints between nodes with largest amplitudes are called antinodes and usually marked as “A”.

The distance between two successive nodes is half of a wavelength and is equal to λ /2. λ is a wavelength symbol.  The distance from a node to the nearest antinode denoted as NA is equal to λ/4.
