Chapter 1: Understanding Your Math Foundations

Build confidence with the essential pre-algebra skills every student needs before college math.

What You Will Practice

This lesson supports the first Book 1 chapter by reviewing the skills students need before algebra, geometry, statistics, and pre-calculus.

Mini Lesson

1. Negative Numbers

When adding a positive and a negative number, subtract the absolute values and keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.

Example: -8 + 3 = -5

2. Order of Operations

Use PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction.

Example: 6 + 4 × 3 = 6 + 12 = 18

3. Variables

A variable is a letter that represents a number.

Example: If x = 7, then 2x + 5 = 2(7) + 5 = 19

4. Simple Equations

Solving an equation means finding the value that makes both sides equal.

Example: x - 9 = 4 → x = 13

5. Fractions to Decimals

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

Example: 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75

Interactive Practice

Choose a topic, answer the question, and check your feedback. This is the first version of the DNAPOT practice engine.

Mastery Check

Before moving to Chapter 2, students should be able to do the following without heavy guessing.

I can add and subtract positive and negative numbers.

PEMDAS

I can use the correct order of operations.

Variables

I can substitute a value into an expression.

Equations

I can solve simple one-step equations.

Fractions
